What Are Two Types of Smoke Alarms?

Smoke alarms are one of the most important safety tools in your home. If a fire breaks out, or if someone accidentally sets it off, having a working smoke alarm installed can be critical to saving you and your family's lives. With the increasing number of fires in the residential sector and increasing popularity of home security systems, it only makes sense to invest in a reliable device like the 2 types of smoke alarm.

Smoke alarms are great devices to have in your home. If a fire starts, you want them to sound as soon as possible. This keeps you safe, and lessens the chance of having to deal with a fire yourself. They can save lives, but there are two different types of smoke alarms: ionization and photo detectors. The two types of smoke alarms are ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms. Ionization alarms use an electric current to activate the alarm while photoelectric alarms use a light to activate the alarm.

Ionization alarms are more common because they’re more reliable than photoelectric alarms in cold temperatures, which still has its disadvantages for older homes without central heating or air conditioning. Photoelectric alarms are also less expensive to replace than ionization sensors and can be installed on ceiling panels or in the attic with an accessory kit.

Ionization alarms use a radioactive element to create a small electrical current when smoke particles enter the alarm. Photoelectric alarms rely on light emitted by the burning particles to create a similar electrical current.

It was in the 1950s that the first ionization smoke detector was being produced and sold. This device got its name for the process of ionization. Ionization is a way to measure the amount of charged particles in a given area at any time. So, for instance, detection of background radiation or radioactivity employs such ionization techniques. The ionization smoke detector was first used in homes but eventually found its way into business buildings, too. The first use in classrooms should not be too surprising. If a fire broke out in a classroom, students and teachers would need to react immediately to survive and take action with their belongings. There is no time to waste when an alarm sounds because it could save lives.

The best way to choose which type of smoke alarm is right for you depends on your home's layout and features. If you have an older home with long hallways, then ionization alarms may be more convenient than photoelectric ones. If your home has hard-to-reach areas, or if it has an attached garage, then you might want a photoelectric alarm instead of one that needs batteries every month or so.

The smoke alarms are the one of kinds of alarm and these are usually electric or battery operated. The strobe light and the beeping sound can be very annoying to a person having a bad dream or the baby sleeping. And it is always good to check the battery and make sure that it is in the proper condition to function, if you need any assistance then you can always hire any professional around your place.

The hardwired version connects to your home's electrical system and has a battery backup. With this type, you'll always have power, even if there's a power outage in your home. This makes hardwired smoke alarms the more reliable choice and ensures that they're always on and alerting you in the case of an emergency.
